Foundation of the University of Calcutta

The Court of Directors of the East India Company sent a despatch in July, 1854 to the Governor-General of India in Council, suggesting the establishment of the Universities of Calcutta, Madras and Bombay. In pursuance of that despatch, the University of Calcutta was founded on JANUARY 24, 1857.The University adopted in the first instance, the pattern of the University of London and gradually introduced modifications in its constitution.

Applicants should be B.Sc. Hons. in Physics with Mathematics as General Subject / B.Sc. Hons. in Computer Science / B.Sc. Hons. in Mathematics (C.U. current year) with Physics / Statistics / Computer Science as one of the Genl. Subjects / B.Sc. Hons. in Statistics (C.U. current year) with Physics / Mathematics / Computer Science as one of the General subjects. C.U. & Non-C.U. Comp. Sc. Hons. candidates have to appear in Entrance Test. All the candidates should have at least 55% marks in Graduation level (Hons.).   

M.Tech. in Computer Science & Engineering           

Admission Procedure   

Applicants should be  B.Tech / B.E. in Computer Science / Computer Science & Engineering / Computer Science & Technology. Candidates completing MCA (with B.Sc. Hons. in Physics / Mathematics / Statistics / Computer Science / Electronics Science) from Calcutta University are eligible only. Candidates completing M.Sc. in Computer & Information Science (with B.Sc. Hons. in Computer Science from University of Calcutta) can apply.Candidates completing B.Tech. in I.T. (CU only) are eligible. Equivalent degree of B.Tech. in Computer Science & Engineering of Calcutta University will also be considered.Non-C.U. candidates must have at least 60% or its equivalent grade in last qualifying examination and at least 60% or its equivalent grade in 10+2 level. Percentage of sum of best 4(four) subjects at H.S. (10+2) level will be considered as percentage of marks at H. S. (10+2) level. All Non-CU candidate must have GATE qualifying valid Score. All Non-CU Degrees must be approved by the UGC/AICTE and equivalent to the C.U. degree in the respective subjects. Except CU current year B. Tech. in CSE, and IT and the CU MCA candidates, all have to go through Entrance Test followed by Interview. GATE qualified valid score is not mandatory for CU students.

Facilities at University of Calcutta

  • Library

    The University of Calcutta library, has a collection of more than ten lakh books. Besides books, the seven campuses of the University together possess more than 2 lakh volumes of bound journals, M.Phil. and Ph.D. dissertations, proceedings of conferences, reports, maps, standards, patents, newspapers, manuscripts, microfilms, CD-ROMs. As many as 20 departmental libraries out of a total of 39, have a collection of over 15,000 volumes which includes books, bound journals and non-book materials. The Department of Law Library holds over 85,000 volumes in hard copy. The collection is strong in all aspects with special emphasis on legal history and jurisprudence, business and commercial law, taxation and international business transactions.

  • Hostel

    There are 16 Halls & Hostels under the University of Calcutta providing accommodation to about 1550 students studying in the University Colleges of Arts, Commerce, Science ,Technology and Law and also the Undergraduate students of the colleges as well as men research scholars/fellows of the University. Management of Halls/Hostels is executed by Board of Residence, as advisory body of the University of Calcutta.
